New article: Significant changes in seaweed community structure revealed by a nationwide long-term monitoring survey in Japan “Monitoring-Site 1000” over the past 15 years (2008–2022)

Please take a look at our new review article on the nationwide long-term monitoring program in Japan, “Monitoring-Site 1000,” which summarizes 15 years of surveys (2008–2022) and reveals significant changes in seaweed community structure, including the disappearance of kelp forests. Since the article is open access, anyone can download it from the website. The website also provides extensive supplementary materials, including many beautiful underwater photos taken during the surveys—please don’t miss them.

Second Jeju International Island Symposium

Professor Ryuta Terada, the head of the Marine Botany Laboratory, was invited to the 2nd Jeju International Island Symposium as one of the speakers. The symposium was held from July 9th to 11th in Jeju City, Korea. He presented the status of the nationwide long-term monitoring survey known as "Monitoring-Site 1000" in Japan over the past 15 years. As Jeju Island and Kyushu Island are very close, with a distance of around 200 km between them, we believe our concerns about the degradation of seaweed communities observed in Kyushu may be helpful in considering the possibility of future changes in seaweed communities on Jeju Island. We express our thanks to the organizing committee of this symposium for inviting him to this wonderful opportunity.

Best poster presentation award in the 8th Asian-Pacific Phycological Forum

A PhD. student of the MB lab, Mr. Jumpei Kozono was awarded the best poster presentation award in the 8th Asian-Pacific Phycological Forum (APPF) that was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October 2017. APPF is an international conference of Phycology in the Asian-Pacific Region that has been held every three years, and more than 300 participants were attended.
Based on the field and laboratory experiments, he presented the ecophysiological study of an endangered freshwater red alga, Thorea okadae from Japan, and determined the optimum irradiance and temperature environments on the photosynthetic performance. This knowledge is expected to contribute the conservation of the optimum habitat for this species.

Best Presentation Award(大学院生が日本水産学会九州支部会で優秀学生発表賞を受賞しました)

Iori Tatamidani, a MSc student of the lab, won the Best Presentation Award at the Kyushu regional meeting of Japanese Society of Fisheries Science that was held in Miyazaki on January 10 .
