New article: Solieria latifolia sp. nov. and S. yoshidae sp. nov. (Solieriaceae, Rhodophyta) from offshore Tanegashima Island

Please take a look at our new article on two newly discovered species of the genus Solieria from offshore Tanegashima Island. It was published on May 12, 2025, in Phycologia, the official journal of the International Phycological Society.

In recent years, we have focused on species diversity and environmental adaptations in Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems (MCEs—ecosystems found at depths greater than 30 m) around offshore Tanegashima Island, and have published a series of related articles. The species name Solieria yoshidae was dedicated to the late Dr. Tadao Yoshida (1933–2024), Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University, who was a specialist in the taxonomy of Solieria.

Research voyage of the T/S Nansei-Maru, Kagoshima University

The Marine Botany Lab and Kagoshima City Aquarium participated in a research voyage aboard the T/S Nansei-Maru of Kagoshima University, conducting a deep subtidal algal survey off the coast of Tanegashima Island in the northern Ryukyu Islands. The weather and sea conditions were calm, and we successfully returned to Kagoshima today. This survey was conducted as part of a training voyage for university students in the Faculty of Fisheries.

T/S Nansei-Maru Tokara Islands Survey: Gaja-jima Island

 As the second research voyage of the T/S Nansei-Maru for our lab in May, we conducted the Tokara Islands survey featuring an uninhabited island, Gaja-jima island, northern Ryukyu Archipelago. This is the collaboration survey of the Marine Ecology, Ichthyology, and Marine Botany labs at Kagoshima University.

鹿児島大学の鈴木英治先生が中心となり,鹿児島県の維管束植物3914分類群の県内分布図集が鹿児島大学総合研究博物館より刊行されました。海藻研の寺田は,海産顕花植物の分布をまとめました。

種子島沖の調査航海


鹿児島大学水産学部附属練習船南星丸に乗船し,種子島の沖合で調査をおこないました。海藻類の調査は海岸線に近い場所が一般的ですが,南西諸島の周辺は透明度が高く,水深40m付近でも海藻が多く生育しています。調査では,水深40m付近の海藻をドレッジで採集したり,採泥器で微細藻類を採取しました。また,CTDを使って水中の光量と温度を測定しました。毎年実施している本調査から,以下の論文が最近公表されています。

Nemalionopsis tortuosa in Amami Island(オキチモズクの調査を奄美で実施)


Monitoring survey of an endangered freshwater red alga, Nemalionopsis tortuosa was conducted in Amami Island. This species can be found in the downstream of clean freshwater wellspring from winter through early summer.

Phenology and characteristic photobiology of this species were recently reported by our research groups (Fujimoto et al. 2014).

Thorea gaudichaudii(シマチスジノリの観察)

Looks like woolly bear, but is algae. Thorea gaudichaudii from Yoron Island.
"Hair" is the assimilatory filaments that were elongated from medulla.

与論島で採集したシマチスジノリを観察しましたが,同化糸が毛のように長いですね。このあと微分干渉顕微鏡でも観察しましたが,単胞子が形成されていました。

We conducted the seaweed flora survey with local fisherman. It was clear sky with calm waves. It is an absolutely good day for survey.

Thorea gaudichaudii(与論島のシマチスジノリ)

Thorea gaudichaudii is a fresh water alga originally known from Guam in the Mariana Islands. In Japan, this species has been confirmed only from Ryukyu Islands including Okinawa, Miyako, Hateruma and Yoron Is, and can be found in small freshwater springs used by local inhabitants.


This species was reported from Yoron Is. in early spring (Suzawa et al. 2010). Today, we visited there to confirm its status in summer season.
Two other freshwater algae, Nemalionopsis tortuosa and Thorea okadae, generally occur in winter and disappear by summer in Kagoshima Prefecture. However, it was present today in Yoron Is.

シマチスジノリは熱帯から亜熱帯にかけての湧水地に生育する淡水紅藻で,環境省のレッドリストでは絶滅危惧I類(CR+EN)に記載されています。日本で確認されている生育地のほとんどは沖縄県ですが,その多くで群落が消失しています。

Survey of two Zostera species using Diving-PAM(アマモ,コアマモの調査)

 The field survey regarding the dehydration tolerance of two seagrass, Zostera japonica and Zostera marina, was conducted in kagoshima Bay. It was the MS research of Tatamidani-kun.
ヒジキの調査に続いて,アマモとコアマモの乾燥耐性をフィールドで調査してみました。M1のT谷君の修論です。

 Still tide is high, but he started the survey. Weather was fine with clear sky.
コアマモとアマモが一緒に生えているところはほとんどないのですが,ここはコアマモ群落にアマモが点在しています。

奄美群島漁業振興大会で藻場の保全に関する講演をしました。ご招待下さいました鹿児島県大島支庁林務水産課のみなさまに御礼申し上げます。

奄美大島から与論島までの漁業者や行政関係者が参加しました。まさか名瀬の懇親会で与論献奉(与論島独特の飲み方)になるとは夢にも思っていませんでしたが,楽しいひとときでした(注)。

注:与論島独特のお酒の飲み方で,楽しい親睦会となるのがよいのですが,強靱なアルコール分解酵素を持つことが求められます。

奄美大島の豪雨災害があった場所で,オオイシソウの一種を見つけました。
