8th Asian-Pacific Phycological Forum (APPF)

The 8th Asian-Pacific Phycological Forum (APPF) was held during 8th through 13th October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and more than 200 participants from the Asian-Pacific region were attended.
From the MB lab, professor Ryuta Terada participated as one of the invited speaker in the Kelp biology Session, and two PhD students, Jumpei Kozono and Iris Ann Borlongan also attended to the contributed poster and oral sessions, respectively.
Next APPF will be held in Hokkaido University, Sapporo, in September 2020. See you again in Japan!

A meeting and seminar at the Sam Ratulagi University （インドネシア・サムラトランギ大学を訪問）

Next two days, we will be having a meeting and seminar regarding the international linkage program of the graduate schools at Sam Ratulangi University, Manado, Indonesia.

明日からの2日間、インドネシアのサムラトランギ大学で大学院の国際連携に関する会議とセミナーをおこないます。数年ぶりにマナドにきました。学生時代に同じ研究室だったグレボーさんは今や教授になり、次期学部長として会議を主催します。感慨深いです。

Sargassum forest in Ko Libong, Thailand

We found a beautiful Sargassum forest in Ko Libong, Trang, Thailand.

Seaweed & Seagrass survey in Trang, Thailand（タイ・トランでの海藻・海草調査）

アンダマン海に面したタイのトラン沿岸で海藻・海草の調査が始まりました。タイのプリンス・ソンクラー大学の海藻・海草研究グループを中心に，ベルギー，日本の研究者が参加しての合同調査チームです。

Field survey for the seaweed and seagrass biodiversity was launched in Trang that is facing along the coast of Andaman Sea, Thailand. More than ten participants including Belgian, Thai and Japanese researchers are attending to publish the field Guide in this region.

Hydropuntia eucheumatoides Survey（リュウキュウオゴノリの調査）

We conducted the field survey at an island offshore of Nha Trang City to collect some species of Gracilaria including Hydropuntia eucheumatoides. It is known as one of the edible alga that is sold at the local market in Nha Trang. Although, it is listed as one of the endangered species in Japan due to the degradation of the Japanese habitat.
今日はボートを借り切って，Nha Trang市の沖合にあるHon Tre島で調査をおこないました。今日のターゲットは，市場でも売られていたリュウキュウオゴノリです。本種は（ベトナムで）食用にされる有用種ですが，日本では環境省のレッドリストに掲載されている（日本での絶滅が危惧される）絶滅危惧種です。

Sargassum Harvest in Nha Trang

On the fourth day in Nha Trang, Vietnam, we conducted the field survey at Hon Chong district to collect seaweeds. Before arriving at sampling site, we stopped at a sandy beach. We could see some fisherman's activity.

After that, we conducted the field survey, and finished the collecting samples successfully. Tomorrow, we will conduct another survey at a site that is located in the offshore island.

Kappaphycus survey in Vietnam

I am staying in Vietnam to conduct a PAM survey since the last weekend. This is the photo of my temporal base at the fisherman's housing that is facing Kappaphycus farm. I am measuring the diurnal change of  photosynthesis at every hour during daytime.

Kappaphycus farm is located in the Cam Ranh Bay that can be arrived at within one hour drive from Nha Trang City. There is no waves, but the current is quite strong like a river.

Nha Trang 今昔

Nha Trangを前回訪れたのは1999年ですが，当時と現在の街の変貌ぶりには驚くばかりです。ちなみに，1990年代初頭からベトナムを訪れているK口先生よると，1990年初頭のころはインフラ整備も遅れており，すごかったとか。

今回お世話になったNha Trang Institute of Research and Application。建物は変わりませんが，すっかりきれいになって，エレベータがついていました。

Edible seaweeds in the market （ベトナム・ニャチャン市のダム市場で見つけた食用海藻）

Before starting our field survey in the sea, we visited a public market in Nha Trang City. Although it was more than ten years ago, I visited here when I attended a international workshop on the taxonomy of economic seaweeds.
海での調査を始める前に，ニャチャン市のダム市場に行きました。ここは1999年に訪れたときにも来ているところで，建物は変わっていませんでした。

Caulerpa salad and drink (Seaweed survey in Krabi Thailand 1)

I will be in Krabi of Thailand this week to conduct the seaweed collection survey with Thai and Belgian scientists. Although detailed reports will be updated after come back home, I uploaded two photos of Caulerpa that were found in the dinner (not underwater, on the dish).
海藻調査でクラビーに来ていますが，夕食の席でKhan先生（カセサート大学）がイワズタの一種をサラダで持ってきてくれました。海ぶどうとは違う種類ですが，こちらの方がさらに美味しいです。

大学院生がフィリピンから帰国

研究室の大学院生がフィリピン大学から帰ってきました。

Short stay in Ilorio, University of the Philippines（フィリピン大学ビサヤス校での海外研修を実施）

Today, MS students of the Marine Botany lab have arrived in Iloilo City, Philippines, to attend some special classes at the University of the Philippines, Visayas. This short stay includes some field trips at Panay Island including the visit to the SEAFDEC-AQD.

海藻研の院生4名がフィリピン大学ビサヤス校に短期滞在しています。いくつかの講義に出席すると共に，パナイ島や周辺小島嶼で調査を行う予定です。SEAFDEC-AQDも見学する予定です。

Field survey in Phangan & Tao Islands, Thailand（タオ島，パンガン島での調査）

This month, I was in Thailand to conduct a survey in Tao and Phangan Islands that are located in near Koh Samui. I was absolutely impressed to these wonderful islands. If possible, I would like to visit again as the vacation.

今月は，調査でタイのタオ島とパンガン島に行っていました。今度は休暇で来たいですね。

院生のフィリピン研修（その2）

 帰国後の報告ですが，とても有意義なフィリピン訪問だったようです。

SEAFDECのイガン・マリンステーションでは，キリンサイ類の養殖実験を見学しました。

タイでの海藻調査

タイには1997年以来何回も訪れていますが、今回はプーケットの北西沖にあるスリン島に行きました。ミャンマーとの国境に近い島です。

島全体が国立公園に指定されており、公園事務所が管理するバンガロー（とテント）以外に宿泊施設はありません。電気は夜間に4時間のみで、シャワーは水です。

バンガローが並ぶ（といっても10棟くらい？）遊歩道。海抜10mほどの場所にあるので津波の心配はありませんが、上り下りがきつい。

 サンゴは少し前に大規模な白化があったようで、あまりよい状態とは思えませんが・・・

 魚影の濃さには驚きました。

 見上げるとこれだけの魚が泳いでいます。私も色々なところに行っていますが、ここは記憶に残る場所のひとつになりました。

タイでの調査

今年は10月頃から何故だか忙しくなり，あっという間に12月になってしまいました。
脱稿できない原稿をかかえたまま，タイに来ています。今日からアンダマン海のスリン島に行きます。電気は夜間に4時間だけという島なので，しばらく更新が途絶えます。

プーケットを早朝に出発すること陸路約2時間・・・港を出港してまもなく携帯の圏外です。

ミクロネシアから帰国しました。

しばらく更新が途絶えていましたが、ミクロネシア連邦のポンペイ島で海藻・海草の調査をしていました。

8日に無事帰国しましたので、随時更新していきます。

ただ・・・・この間に仕事用のMacが壊れてしまいました。一週間ほど古い機種で仕事をしますので、メールのやりとりや藻類学会誌の編集が停滞しますことをお許し下さい。


ミクロネシア（広義）はホンダワラ属藻類の種多様性が低いところとして知られています。世界で400種もあるグループなのに、ポンペイ島で見たのは3種だけでした。ただ、ガラモ場は各所に見られました。種類が少ないだけで、バイオマスは広大です。このことは海草にも言えて、ポンペイ等を囲むように生えている広大なアマモ場の構成種もたった3種でした。

ポンペイ島での調査

ポンペイ島では島の北部を中心に海藻・海草類の生育調査をおこないました。海岸はほとんどマングローブで覆われており，陸からアクセスできるところは数カ所しかありません。州政府の水産部局の協力で，ボートを用いて調査をおこないました。

調査地を検討するH田先生とK井氏。ボートをつけているのは港ではなく，旧日本海軍がつくった飛行艇用の桟橋です。

海岸線はほぼマングローブで覆われ，その外はウミショウブのアマモ場でした。

どこまでも続くアマモ場でした。

島の北西部では，アマモ場に混じって広大なガラモ場が見られました。
