A survey of freshwater red algae including Nemalionopsis tortuosa was carried out. This species can be found in shaded areas of irrigation canals; however, confirmed habitat is limited, and only around twenty sites have been recorded from Kyushu, Shikoku and Okinawa Islands. Presently, this species is registered as an endangered species by the Japanese Ministry of Environment.
Characteristic ecology and photosynthetic performance of this species were recently reported from our group.
