Special workshop on algae for elementary school students(ひらめき☆ときめきサイエンス開催,2回目)
Second day of the special workshop on algae for elementary school students has successfully finished. Students made own seaweed exsiccatae that comprise more than 30 specimens. In Japan, elementary school students have to conduct a "research" in the any field of science during the summer break. This exsiccatae will be submitted to the school as the report of their research.
We have received the grant for this workshop from JSPS in the past four years.
日本学術振興会ひらめき☆ときめきサイエンスの2回目が本日開催され,30名の子どもたちが世界でひとつだけ,自分だけの「海の森図鑑」を完成させました。

Thorea gaudichaudii is a freshwater red alga that is distributed in the freshwater spring in the islands of tropical western Pacific including Ryukyu Archipelago. This species can be found in well-shaded freshwater spring without direct sunlight. We elucidated the irradiance and temperature environment of the habitat, and reported the characteristic photosynthetic performance of this alga.
This is the sixth article from our lab.
環境省の絶滅危惧種でもある淡水紅藻,シマチスジノリの生育環境と光合成に関する論文が藻類学の国際誌であるJournal of Applied Phycologyから出ました。

ひらめき☆ときめきサイエンスの公開講座「発見!体感!本物の海藻を見てさわって食べて「海の森図鑑」をつくろう」
日本学術振興会ひらめき☆ときめきサイエンスの公開講座「発見!体感!本物の海藻を見てさわって食べて「海の森図鑑」をつくろう」の前半(2日間のプログラムの1日目)が開催されました。
申込者多数のため,抽選で選ばれた30名の小学生が参加しました。テングサから寒天を抽出してゼリーを作成・試食したり,食べられる海藻の形など観察して から,約30種の海藻押し葉を作成しました。押し葉標本は一週間かけて乾燥させ,来週の日曜日にラベルを貼って海藻押し葉図鑑を完成させる予定です。

水圏植物学研究室では,2016年(平成28年度)4月入学の大学院生(修士課程,博士後期課程)を募集しています。
当研究室は,海藻,海草,淡水藻類の分類や生理生態に関する研究を行っています。特に,SCUBAを使った潜水調査や光合成の水中測定等で国内外から高い評価を得ており,学内では「海に潜る」研究室として知られています。
他大学の学生さんも積極的に受け入れていますので,興味のある学生さんは是非お問い合わせ下さい。修士課程の出願〆切は2015年6月19日です。

Workshop for the seaweed survey in Kobe University(神戸大の藻場モニタリングワークショップに参加)
Two students of our lab participated with a workshop that was held at Kobe University. This WS was held as the joint activity of the annual survey for the long-term assessment of natural seaweed communities (Grant from the Ministry of Environments).
For this survey and WS, more than ten phycologists and students from five different institutions were participated. As the first day, we conducted the field survey at the site in Awajishima-Island that is facing to the Kitan Straits, Pacific Ocean.

New Article: Sargassum fusiforme(ヒジキの光合成に関する論文)
Our lab's new paper was published from Phycologia!
We have reported the photosynthetic characteristics of an intertidal brown alga, Sargassum fusiforme, based on the in vitro and in situ measurements. Indeed, it was quite hard work SCUBA diving from before sunrise and through the sunset, but the data we collected were absolutely great. From the figures in our article, you can clearly see the characteristic decline of the effective quantum yield during the day and under strong irradiance.

Namalionopsis tortuosa(オキチモズクの調査)
A survey of freshwater red algae including Nemalionopsis tortuosa was carried out. This species can be found in shaded areas of irrigation canals; however, confirmed habitat is limited, and only around twenty sites have been recorded from Kyushu, Shikoku and Okinawa Islands. Presently, this species is registered as an endangered species by the Japanese Ministry of Environment.

この論文では,薩南諸島(種屋久,奄美群島)における熱帯性・温帯性海草の分布状況を明らかにしました。熱帯性の海草は沖縄以南,温帯性海草は九州以北でよく調査・研究されていますが,奄美群島や種屋久は情報が不足していました。各種の分布図から,この地域が温帯性・熱帯性海草の分布推移帯(エコトーン)であることがよく分かります。

Annual meetingof Japanese Society of Phycology(日本藻類学会第39回大会)
The 39th annual meeting of Japanese Society of Phycology (JSP35) has been held at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. According to the organizer, more than 200 participants seems to be attended.
From our lab, five students including two undergraduate students presented own research. Next meeting will be held in Tokyo in March 2016.

Characteristic photobiology of this species was recently reported by our team.
Porphyra survey at Minami-Satsuma City(坊津で坊ノリの調査)
Field survey of Pyropia (= Porphyra) was conducted at a rocky shore in Minami-Satsuma City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Fortunately, we found a big Pyropia population on the rocks in the upper intertidal zone facing the East China Sea. Indeed, rocks were mostly covered by the alga.
薩摩半島南西部にある南さつま市坊津でアマノリ類の調査を行いました。この種は地元で「坊ノリ」と呼ばれており,波あたりの激しい沖合の瀬に生育しています。数年ぶりに来ました。
This alga, known as Bo-Nori for local people, was formerly harvested by fishermen in Winter, and was indispensable to their dietary culture.
