We had visited Northern Ryukyu Islands including Satsuma-Iwojima by our university vessel, Nanseimaru. Satsuma-Iwojima is an isolated island in the northern part of Ryukyu Islands. This research voyage was conducted as the joint survey with the RCPI (Research Center for the Pacific Islands of Kagoshima University) and the students of departments of Law and Letters.
At the mouth of Kagoshima Bay, we surveyed the drifting seaweed, Sargassum horneri.
Because drifting seaweeds are comprising from many shoots of Sargassum, it is quite big and heavy to catch by net.
Today's destination was Satsuma-Iwojima. This is an active volcanic island, and we could see many hot springs that are welling from the seafloor. The color of coastal seawater is different from ocean water.
