沖縄県で長年にわたって海藻・海草類のご研究に尽力されている当真武博士が、ご研究の集大成となる大著「沖縄の海藻と海草（自然環境・養殖・海藻250種）」を出版されました。

Visiting Sicentist from Vietnam（ベトナムからの訪問研究者が海藻研で実験をしました）

A Vietnamese visiting scientist, Mr Triet Duy Vo, Nha Trang Institute of Technology Research and Application, visited to the Marine Botany Lab this week. He conducted morphological observation and photosynthetic experiment for a species of Solieriaceae.
ベトナムの藻類研究者Triet氏が海藻研を訪問し，ミリン科海藻の観察と実験を行いました。Trietさんと寺田は10年来の交流を続けています。

Coral survey in Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture（五島列島でサンゴのモニタリングを実施）

This week, we had conducted a field survey regarding coral community including fish assemblage in Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture. This is the survey collaborated with the researchers of Nagasaki University and National Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES, Tsukuba City). Goto Island is located offshore of western coast of Kyushu Island.
長崎県の五島列島でサンゴ群集のモニタリング調査を実施しました。国立環境研と長崎大・鹿児島大の合同調査です。

International Symposium in Amakusa Marine Biological Laboratory（九大天草臨海実験所で国際シンポジウムを開催）

Amakusa Marine Biological Laboratory of Kyushu University (Amakusa-Shimojima, Kumamoto Prefecture) announced that they will be having an international symposium in the end of November regarding the biodiversity in changing coastal waters in tropical and subtropical Asia. This symposium, which will be held in Reihoku Town in Amakusa-Shimojima, also includes some field workshops in Amakusa Island.

九州大学大学院理学研究院附属天草臨海実験所（熊本県天草郡苓北町）は，アジアの熱帯・亜熱帯域における沿岸水の変化に際しての生物多様性に関する国際シンポジウムを11月末に開催します。
沿岸域の生態学・分類学に関する研究者約100名が参加する予定とのことです。海藻関係では，鹿大海藻研や長崎大環東シナ海海洋資源環境センターの研究者が参加する予定です。他に，海草やサンゴの調査でお世話になっている方々も参加するとのことです。

ちょうど苓北町の藻場で調査を数年間実施してきたので，成果を発表するよい機会となりそうです。

Fall semester（後期の開始）

Prefectural University of Kumamoto

Fall semester has started from this week.
This semester, I have a class of Marine Botany for undergraduate students in KU. Furthermore, every two weeks, I also have a class of Phycology for undergraduate students in Prefectural University of Kumamoto (PUK). I will be at the PUK in Kumamoto City for Tuesday of every two weeks by Shinkansen (Super express train). I will also be having a class of Marine Botany at Miyazaki University in the end of coming December. It is one week intensive course, and will be offered in every two years. I am very glad to meet with various students in three universities.

仕事をいろいろ積み残しながら，後期が今週から始まってしまいました。

Seagrass community in Koshiki Islands（甑島のアマモ場）

Koshiki Islands Fishermen's Union, Kagshima Prefecture, invited me to the island to attend the meeting for the conservation of seagrass community. Before the meeting that is held in the evening, fortunately, I had a opportunity to check the current status of seagrass and seaweed with some local people. A boat departed from Teuchi Fishing harbor.

7月のことなのでもう2ヶ月前ですが，下甑島でアマモの保全に関する集会に出席し，講演をしました。講演は夜だったので，日中に手打のアマモ場を簡単に調査しました。

Monthly survey at Nagashima Island（大学院生が長島町で調査）

On September 6, MS student Soku conducted his monthly survey using Diving-PAM at Nagashima Island. Eckloniopsis was still present but most of all plants had sorus.

Seagrass conference in Obama (全国アマモサミット2012 in 若狭)

Leptofauchea leptophylla （トゲナシマダラの論文）

Dr. Masahiro Suzuki and his collaborators recently published a paper regarding the re-assessment of Fauchea leptophylla from Kagoshima, Japan.

トゲナシマダラの分類の再検討に関する論文が最近出ました。トゲナシマダラは，桜島の水深10-20mに生育する紅藻で，水中で紫色に輝く美しい種です。

Autumn meeting of JSFS（日本水産学会秋季大会に参加）

Three MS students attended the autumn meeting of Japanese Society of Fisheries Science that was held at National Fisheries University, Shimonoseki City. Two of the three students were the first attendance to the academic conference.

下関市の水産大学校で開催された日本水産学会秋季大会に院生3名が参加しました。3人のうちの2人は初めての学会参加です。これで今年の院生は全員学会発表したことになります。

Because JSFS conference comprises whole field of fisheries science (i.e. fish biology to economical studies), we could learn various talking and poster sessions. Unfortunately, there was little  presentations in the field of phycology except for some oral and poster secessions. However, we were very lucky that we could talk with some specialists of seaweed ecophysiology in our poster session.

水産学会は水産学に関するすべての分野を含むため，様々な研究発表を見ることができます。残念ながら藻類に関する発表は多くありませんでしたが，数名の専門家の方から助言をいただくことができました。ポスターをご覧になった方々に御礼申し上げます。

Field survey in Phangan & Tao Islands, Thailand（タオ島，パンガン島での調査）

This month, I was in Thailand to conduct a survey in Tao and Phangan Islands that are located in near Koh Samui. I was absolutely impressed to these wonderful islands. If possible, I would like to visit again as the vacation.

今月は，調査でタイのタオ島とパンガン島に行っていました。今度は休暇で来たいですね。

A new paper regarding Eucheuma and Kappaphycus

A former student of my lab recently published a new paper regarding the photosynthetic performance of two Indonesian carrageenophyte using the Diving-PAM. It was the part of his dissertation of the Ph.D.

分布南限のアマモの生態と光合成の論文 (A paper of Japanese Zostera marina using PAM and dissolved oxygen sensor)

アマモは北海道から九州にかけて広く分布していますが，太平洋西部におけるアマモの分布南限は鹿児島湾です。
分布の南限の群落はいったいどのような環境なのでしょうか？光や温度の環境にどのように適応しているのでしょうか？院生が2年間取り組んだ研究の一部が論文になりました。

A new paper regarding the ecology and physiology of Zostera marina was published from the bulletin of Japanese Society of Fisheries Science. It was a part of the dissertation of MS degree for the first author.Although the text is written in Japanese, English summary and captions are included.

海ぶどう（クビレズタ）の分布と生育地 (Paper of Caulerpa lentillifera)

クビレズタは海ぶどうの名前で養殖され，海藻サラダとして食用にされています。元々は八重山諸島以南で見られる種類ですが，南西諸島全体での分布は十分に把握されていませんでした。鹿児島県でも養殖されていますが，母藻は沖縄以南から入手しています。今回，本種の分布を調査した論文が出ました。

Students of the marine botany lab, Kagoshima University, participated in an activity for the conservation of seaweed forest with the local fisherman in Nagashima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is also reported at the official website of Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University.

Annual meeting of the JSP, Sapporo（大学院生が日本藻類学会第36回大会に参加）

Nearly couples weeks ago, the 36th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Phycology (JSP) was held at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, and three MS students of our lab attended.

先月のことになりますが，大学院生3名が北海道大学で開催された日本藻類学会第36回大会に参加しました。

南さつま市でサンゴ調査を実施 (Field survey at Minami-Satsuma City)

修士1年のW辺君が鹿児島県南さつま市の某所でサンゴの調査を行いました。
A MS student, Yuki, conducted a field survey of corals at the offshore of Minami-Kyushu City, Kagoshima Prefecture.

みわたすかぎりのサンゴ・・・九州にもこんなところがあるんですね。実は有名なダイビングスポットでした。
It was absolutely amazing view of the corals. I didn't know such a wonderful community of the corals are growing in the coast of Kyushu Island. I really impressed it.

長島町でDiving-PAMを使って調査 (Field survey of Eckloniopsis)

修士1年のS田君が6月に続いて長島町で調査を行いました。Diving-PAMを持って水深20mまで光合成を測定していきます。
MS student, Soku, conducted his monthly survey at Nagashima Island. He used the Diving-PAM to measure the quantum yield of Eckloniopsis radicosa. 

種子島沖で調査 (Research voyage at offshore of Tanegashima)

鹿児島大学水産学部附属練習船南星丸に乗船し，種子島の沖合で海洋調査を行いました。
We conducted the survey at offshore of Tanegashima. It was a part of research voyage of T/S Nansei-maru, Kagoshima University.

鹿屋市で藻場調査

梅雨で調査日程が大幅に乱れてしまっています。普通は土曜に調査をしませんが，荒天で延び延びになっていた鹿屋市の藻場調査を実施しました。

調査には院生のS田君，K村君，4年生のT谷君が参加しました。船上で調査機材の確認をしていますが，この日もはっきりしない天気でした。

指宿市で調査 (Field survey at Ibusuki City)

修士2年のK堀君が鹿児島湾に面した指宿市で藻場調査を行いました。彼はここで一年以上生態調査を続けていますが，今回が最後の調査になるかもしれません。
Takahiro, MS Candidate, conducted his field survey at Ibusuki City facing the Kagoshima Bay.  In this site, he has been conducting the survey of some Sargassum species in the past one year. Probably, this time might be the last survey for his MS thesis.
